Our Story
Youth Future Farmers of Africa-Uganda (YoFFA-Uganda) is a national organization of secondary students engaged in agricultural education in Uganda. YoFFA-Uganda was co-founded by Mr Ronald Ddungu and Mr Brian Kibirige in 2014 as Young Farmers’ Club after the implementation of the 1st Annual School Farm Camp 2014 at Gayaza High School. The Young Farmers’ Club aimed at promoting practical agricultural education and creating a passion for pursuing careers in the agricultural sector including farming among in-school youth. After conferring with 02 volunteer educators and 01 student leader from the Future Farmers of America (FFA) in 2016, the club rebranded into the Youth Future Farmers of Africa-Uganda YoFFA and expanded its activities to cover other schools in Uganda. Using its School Agriculture Innovation Platform (SAIP) model a step-by-step procedure, YoFFA works with teachers and school leaders to create YoFFA chapters in schools. Today, YoFFA is led by Mr. Brian Kibirige and has over 100 local chapters in primary and secondary schools across Uganda with a student membership of more than 25,000 and about 200 advisor teachers.
Membership
YoFFA-Uganda membership is open to all students at secondary school level in Uganda including those that pursue agricultural education as a subject and those that do not study agriculture but have a passion for agriculture or farming. YoFFA student members have an opportunity to learn agricultural education practically, participate in leadership & career development activities, engage in community-based activities and participate in exciting student competitions at local and national level.
Chapters
The organization has chapters at secondary school level and currently, YoFFA has over 100 local chapters in primary and secondary schools across Uganda with a student membership of more than 25,000 and about 200 advisor teachers. At school level, each chapter has a leadership structure with 13 student leaders, with representation from lower and high school levels, and 1 chapter advisor preferably a teacher of agriculture. Through local school chapters, students develop life-long skills, practical agricultural knowledge, problem solving skills, critical thinking, leadership and career development experiences among other critical 21st century skills.
Curriculum Integration
YoFFA school chapters across Uganda operate various farming activities in their school-based agricultural education programs (SAEP). These activities can be simple or small operations of school vegetable gardens, poultry, piggery, rabbits, dairy, or even big & commercial mixed school farms where students get hands-on opportunity to learn agriculture. The school chapter is the student organization arm of the school-based agricultural education program that provides students and teachers with the opportunity for curriculum integration through several chapter activities. These activities grow youth leaders and support farming at household & community level.
